La idea de grabar Florilegio, séptimo disco del contrabajista Pablo Martín Caminero, nace a raíz de la invitación que la NDR Big Band de Hamburgo le hace para tocar, con su trío de jazz-flamenco, una selección de temas de sus anteriores discos.
De ahí surge también el nombre de este nuevo proyecto, porque con “Florilegio” –del latín flos, floris “flor” y legere “escoger”–, Caminero redescubre su propio repertorio, acercándose esta vez a él desde una perspectiva, la del cante, hasta ahora no abordada por el contrabajista en sus anteriores trabajos, en los que había ya explorado el repertorio de la guitarra flamenca (“Al Toque”, 2022) y otros esquemas estrictamente instrumentales.
Tras un primer concierto en colaboración con la NDR Big Band en su sede de Hamburgo, para el que su director, Geir Lysne, arregló temas escogidos de las anteriores producciones de Caminero, y que se repetirá en la próxima edición del Festival de Jazz de Vitoria en 2024, se planteó la posibilidad de un nuevo reto en su carrera como compositor e instrumentista: hacer convivir musicalmente un trío de jazz-flamenco con un cantaor.
La experiencia tras más de una década junto al maestro de la guitarra Gerardo Núñez ha permitido a Caminero ser un habitual de los ambientes flamencos, donde conoció en su día al cantaor jerezano David Carpio, quien contó con el contrabajista para su espectáculo “Solos” y para la grabación como invitado en algunos de los temas de su disco “Con la voz en la tierra” (2019).
Ha sido cuestión de tiempo que volvieran a encontrarse en el camino del flamenco y decidieran colaborar en un proyecto como éste, que supone no sólo un reto de convivencia musical entre formatos, sino también desde la perspectiva del repertorio, revisando piezas que a priori parecen pertenecer a puzles distintos y que, tras un profundo trabajo de ambos músicos y amigos, desde sus propias orillas, terminan encajando y conformando un paisaje sonoro especial por su fluidez y naturalidad.
El trío de jazz está integrado, además de por Pablo al contrabajo, por el pianista Daniel García Diego y el baterista Shayan Fathi, ambos, por sus propias experiencias profesionales, con un extensísimo bagaje en el lenguaje del jazz-flamenco, lo que permite que el trío acompañe al cante sin que el cantaor eche de menos la guitarra de la que suele ir casi siempre de la mano y que es “hogar” dentro del flamenco.
“Florilegio” es, a la vez, un concierto de jazz-flamenco y un recital de cante jerezano rancio, forjado en la plazuela de Jerez y con eco de voz ancestral.

“Florilegio”
The idea of recording “Florilegio,” the seventh album by double bassist Pablo Martín Caminero, arises from an invitation extended by the NDR Big Band from Hamburg. They invited him to perform, with his jazz-flamenco trio, a selection of tracks from his previous albums.
The name of this new project also stems from that invitation because with "Florilegio" – derived from the Latin words "flos, floris" meaning "flower," and "legere" meaning "to choose" – Caminero rediscovers his own repertoire. This time, he approaches it from a perspective previously unexplored by the bassist in his earlier works, delving into the realm of singing, a dimension not previously addressed as he had already explored the flamenco guitar repertoire in "Al Toque" (2022) and other strictly instrumental schemes.
After an initial concert in collaboration with the NDR Big Band at their headquarters in Hamburg, for which the director, Geir Lysne, arranged selected pieces from Caminero's previous productions, and which will be repeated at the upcoming edition of the Vitoria Jazz Festival in 2024, the possibility of a new challenge in his career as a composer and instrumentalist arose: musically bringing together a jazz-flamenco trio with a flamenco singer.
Caminero's over a decade of experience alongside the guitar maestro Gerardo Núñez has made him a regular in flamenco circles. It was in this context that he met the Jerez-born singer David Carpio, who enlisted the bassist for his show "Solos" and as a guest performer on some tracks of his album "Con la voz en la tierra" (2019).
It was only a matter of time before they crossed paths again in the flamenco scene and decided to collaborate on a project like this, which poses a musical coexistence challenge between formats and from a repertoire perspective. They revisited pieces that initially seemed to belong to different puzzles but, after deep work by both musicians and friends, fittingly came together to create a special sonic landscape characterized by its fluidity and naturalness.
The jazz trio includes Pablo on double bass, pianist Daniel García Diego, and drummer Shayan Fathi. Through their professional experiences, Garcia and Fathi bring extensive expertise in the language of jazz-flamenco, allowing the trio to accompany the singer without the vocalist missing the guitar that usually goes hand in hand and is considered a cornerstone within flamenco.
“Florilegio” is simultaneously a jazz-flamenco concert and a recital of traditional Jerez singing, forged in La Plazuela de Jerez and echoing the voice of an ancestral tradition.
